Welcome to Class One!

Class One is a Reception class, working  with the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) framework.

Our children have full access to our outside area, and we actively encourage the children to use this extension to the traditional classroom as much as possible.

We had a lovely start to this academic year. The children in Class 1 settled in beautifully and were very busy exploring their new indoor and outdoor environment.
In Reception, we combined two topics for each half term; “All about us” and “Festivals and Celebrations”. The children found out about each other as well as about their families and enjoyed the celebrations of different occasions within their families and in their community.
It was a very busy but a fun term for Class 1. As you can see from our photos, our curriculum was exciting and creative! We read and acted out a number of well-known and loved stories like ‘Owl Babies’, ‘Elmer’, ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears ‘, ‘The Gruffalo’ and ‘Stickman’. We used the Spinney as one of our performance stages and recreated some of the story settings and characters using sticks, twigs, feathers and leaves.
We would like to express our special thanks to Geoff Cross, who visited us and brought in lots of story prompts made of wood (the Three Bears’ Cottage, different size beds and chairs for the characters in the story, a selection of log cottages and fairy houses which the children loved and used during role play). Just before Christmas we all had another surprise from Geoff, when he turned up at school with Santa’s reindeer and gave one to each child to decorate and keep.
We learnt about number recognition and counting, as well as the 2D and 3D shapes and we had lots of fun going on treasure hunts and looking for hidden numbers in the Spinney and in the playground, identifying and naming 3D shapes in our environment.
We love our Friday afternoons, when our Buddy Readers from Class 4 come to us and read our favourite stories. It has been lovely to see the relationships between the youngest and oldest in the school develop so well.
We enjoyed the visit from the local Police Officers ,found out about their work in the community and got a chance to sit in their police car too  .
We had a visit from a lady who had a guide dog and found out about different ways dogs can help the visually impaired people. We asked lots of questions about different things dogs are trained for and can do.

Our Christmas production -‘Amahl and the Night Visitors’ was a real success. We surprised the audience by singing a carol in Romanian as well as a selection of well-loved traditional Christmas carols.
We made salt dough Christmas decorations, which we had lots of fun painting and decorating and enjoyed making and writing Christmas cards for our families.
